What's the difference between base-IPF and just base apart from 100 odd megabytes.

Is the IPF been superseded by something better, are either for a specific job.

I have no idea.

Hey, OpenBSD does not use IPF anymore. From 3.0 onwards it has used PF (http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq6.html#PF) . A somewhat cleaner syntax:

6.2 - Packet Filter (PF)

Note: Packet Filter is the filtering system in OpenBSD 3.0 and later. If you are looking for the IPF/IPNAT FAQ for OpenBSD 2.9 and before, click here.

OpenBSD 3.2 is due to be released 01Nov02. Can't wait! :D
