I just installed Mandrake 9.0 for the first time. Ive wasted so much time already trying to install some themes but still unsuccessful. I unpack KDE themes
and go to desktop preferences to try selecting the tar ball AND also going through the extracted folders but it keeps saying "themerc file not found" which I see it right in front of my eyes! In gnome I tried a nautilus theme, the windows changed going to the theme manager but nothing else did going with the tar ball. Ive tried GTK also with no luck. My question is how the hell do you install themes, by changing the whole look of the icons, wallpapers, windows? Ive read the tutorials from themes.org, kde-look.org but dosent work. Ive also read tutorials that seem to tell you to place the files manually into folders but I dont think this is the way to install a theme, after all a theme is a bunch of files rolled into one package so you dont have to specify them one by one. As you can probably tell I migrated from windows so Im not too famaliar but so far Im managing in linux besides this theme issue. Are there specific instructions or things I should be aware of before installing themes because I have seen hundreds of themes for example GTK, Im pretty sure they work...
and installing gnome themes, to quote another user, "it looks like it was installing something, and still the same old GNOME themes appeared in the box once it was done." and yes, I have restarted the theme manager. I would appreciate it very much if I can get some help from you gurus :). I definitely am glad I found this forum so far.
last, to be more specific, I tried installing the scalable gorrilla themes on http://jimmac.musichall.cz/themes.php3?skin=2#, tried all under gnome and kde. That was the theme that changed the windows look but nothing else, what am I doing wrong? If anyone can help me with installing just this theme, I would be happy in the meantime so I have a pretty interface before I get a lil more comfortable with themes/linux :)
