i read the NHF for ftp install

4. Next, make sure that you have the full URL to the start of the linux tree on your ftp mirror.
(ftp://ftp.linuxberg.com/pub/distributions/RedHat/i386/ or
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/redhat/current/i386/).
This should be in the i386 subdirectory.

i want to do a debian instead of red hat
what is the correct url?

ftp://debian.uchicago.edu/debian
or
ftp://debian.uchicago.edu/debian/dists
or
ftp://debian.uchicago.edu/debian/dists/potato/

how about slack? how do you figure out which part of the tree to point to?

i will just try different ones until it works

thanks! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

to answer my own question:

seems the method described in the NHF is somewhat unique to red hat

reading from http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-install-methods.en.html

there is a method to install debian via ftp

now i will RTFM and follow the instructions

I just installed debian so i don't know if this will work.
what I would do is edit your source list and include the ftp site that you wanna download from. when done you simply issue apt-get install package .
