My experience with manipulating Unix files on a Windows system is not great. Usually the file attributes get clobbered. This raises questions about the viability of creating an installation kit CDROM by downloading the files from Mandrake. Is it do-able? Is it practical? Is it wise? If yes to all, is there a HOW-TO? Should I just download the files (I am using CuteFTP) and burn the CD?

I plan to dual-boot my Win2K system for now, using the extended partition as the Linux drive.

I'm just trying to avoid wasting time, but I'm too cheap to go buy a dist. All my spare cash goes to my son's college fund (starts next year).

You can do all of the above.. it's easy, find a fast mirror site that has the mandrake iso's you want. Download them and then burn them to a cd using nero, or cdrwin, or whatever. When it's done the cd will be bootable. Doesn't get much easier than that..

Another option is to spend $5 at Linux Central (http://www.linuxcentral.com)for the two CDs. You'll be installing by week's end...

When you burn a CD regardless of what the file attributes are pre burn it turns it into a read-only attributed file any way.

Thanks a bunch. Trying mirrors of the Mandrake FTP site now, lookiing for one that gets a fast enough download that I can get the 1.3Gb in less than 60 hours. I may end up buying the CDs for $5.00, a deal too good to pass up.

Sometimes FedExNet is faster than Internet.
