quick question...I reinstalled Mandrake 7.2 and did it just as I have everytime but for some reason when I do a "cdrecord -scanbus" I come up empty handed. Is there any good documentation on this matter? I tried linuxdoc.org but it was all a foreign language to me. I also looked for an NHF but didnt find one either. Any ideas or places to read up on it?

Whereas Mandrake 7.1 did it automaticly for me, in Mandrake 7.2 I had to recompile the kernel for generic SCSI emulation and add the append "hdd=ide-scsi" to LILO in order to get my IDE-CDR working again in Linux.

I've never had to recompile the kernel for SCSI emulation as I just load the necessary modules and add the line to lilo/grub.

How would I go about loading the necessary modules for SCSI emulation?

modprobe ide-scsi

Depends on the distro. Mine (eDesktop) is slightly different than some.

There's procedures for Caldera and Redhat here under CD Burners http://linux.nf/stepbystep.htm and just follow the one for Redhat.

Also if you search the forums for SCSI emulation, I'm sure you will also find the answer.

mdwatts - yeah sure now tell me I didn't have to recompile! - actually I had some other issues I wanted to try - besides kernel recompiling is fun.

Don't mean to be smart, but if you had searched the forums here for CDRW or SCSI emulation or CD burners, you probably would have found out earlier. Also the CD-writer HOW-TO (should be installed with your distro) tells you this.

It's always a good idea to search your topic first before posting as suggested in the Linuxnewbie FAQ's.

Hope the link helped. I've gotten quite a bit out of that site.

Another thing I miss about Open Linux is that kernel module applet thing...
