You don't need an emulator, there are avi players for linux. Try doing a search for "avifile" on Freshmeat.net

Well, it depends on the codec. A lot of AVI files you run into these days are encoded with proprietary codecs, and can't be played on any of the Linux AVI players out there. So cross your fingers...

http://divx.euro.ru/ - URL for aviplay

aviplay works decently. The only alternative I have found is XMPS and that didn't work for me.

Give mplayer (http://mplayer.sourceforge.net/) a try. It does mpeg, many flavors of avi/asf (with good seek support), and DVDs (though it has no ifo parsing right now, so no title/chapter or subtitle support).

It's my favorite player, and it's under active development right now (ie, it's very well supported & maintained, and there should be cool new features coming soon too).
