if i downloaded a new kernel using windows...and now want to burn that file to a cd...will mounting my cdrom drive for msdos make me able to extract that file normally?
or is there another process?

Hm, I don't know if I got your question correctly, but there should be no problem to download the kernel with windows, burn it on a CD and then copy it to your linux partition or whereever your linux is. Just burn the CD and then mount it in linux as usual, you don't have to mount it as an MSDOS device, because CD-ROMS have the ISO9660 format. You just may have to set the permissions on this file correctly after copying it over.

so basically as long as i have downloaded the file and burned it to a cd then load linux...copy it to hard drive..i can unzip the file with no problems right?

Linux and Windows on the same pc? If so, then just mount the win partition and copy the file over.
