I have linux-mandrake 7.2 on my computer.I have a 30 gig udma 66 seagate hardrive.I use that for linux.I also have a 15 gig udma 66 western digital hardrive for windows98Se.When I tried to install it it hung after finding my second harddrive, the 15 gig.So I unpluged it.But now I have to boot with a floppy every time. But get this when i use older versions of mandrake they dont have a promblem with both harddrives hooked up.I was wondering if anyone could give me and idea of how to get mandrake to install with both harddrives hooked up.My ultra dma settings in bios is set to auto. The setting for udma is auto or disabled. My bios also have settings for PIO Mode settings. The bios settings for the PIO Modes are also set to auto. The installation process freezes atfer it finds the second harddrive. The second harddrive is the 15 gig harddrive. The jumper is set on master for the seagate harddrive. The jumper for the western digital 15 gig harddrive is on slave. My 40x cd rom is plugged into the secondary 40 pin ide slot on the motherboard. The jumper setting for the 40x cdrom is on slave.I disabled all the udma settings in bios for all harddrives and i set all the PIO Modes to 0.After I disables all umda settings and set all the PIO Modes to 0 it still does not work.I hope this clears some of the confusion about my promblem.

Thank You,

Not sure about the ata66 stuff...

Anyway, if you want to dual boot, Win*'s c: must be on the primary partition of the first drive (hda1). NT/2k change the game here, but for 9* it is true. Also, lilo can't (until the most recent version I think) boot if your kernel happens to be above the 1024th cylinder on a drive - somewhere around 8.4gb or so.

So, put your 15gb drive as hda, put windows on it, and then put linux on hdb. When you partition that drive for linux, give it a small /boot partition - 25mb or so - at the very front of the drive. That way, it will always be below the 1024th cylinder.

Or, if booting from the floppy works, try just updating lilo to the newest version.

just a comment. windows c drive does not have to be the primary partition on the first hard drive. How do I know? Becuase it is the third partition on my primary drive (linux is the first with 10GB, followed by my 256 MB swap, with windows comming in at 3rd). I never had any problems having mandrake 7.1 or 7.2 working with all of my hard drives. I left all the UDMA settings on in my bios, and did the expert setup durring the installation (you can see it detect the disks this way).

good luck
