a few days ago i had to upgrade to XFree86 to be able to use my new radeon vid card.

well, today, i try to upgrade to rh 8.0, but it gets to the XFree package install, and halts installation because there was an error.

i believe the error was that i had a newer version. so i tried again, this time selecting custom upgrade. i selected everything except xfree86, it install great, reboots, i log into X, and it says "couldn't start Kdeinit, and i get a blank blue screen showing only my mouse pointer."

i tell ya, linux makes a fast, reliable server, but it sure is ridiculous trying to use it.

The problem is that you installed X from source (that was you that was talking about it taking over an hour and a half, right?). When you install stuff from source, the package doesn't tell the package manager about itself (because it doesn't know which package manager you're using), and that causes problems with things that depend on what you installed.

So, anyway, I think if you back up any important files (like stuff in your home directory), and start the RedHat install over, you might have more luck. Don't upgrade, just format the partition (this is why you back up what you want to keep) and do a clean install. You'll get X 4.2.1 as part of the installation.

yeah, looks like a format is the only way to go :(
