I realize that this topic has been covered over and over again, but i feel that this may be useful to those still struggling with the program (especially those wanting to play dvds). After an hour or so of searching with google i stumbled across a website with a step by step process of installing the different parts of xine and then making the little booger run.

Note: I just used this process to get xine working with redhat 8.0 and i'm watching First Contact as i type this message.

Or you could just run apt-get install xine

Check freshrpms.net (http://freshrpms.net) for rpms for apt.

Actually I found MPlayer to be a much less "pain in the backside" DVD player than Xine. In fact, Xine became so user friendly just recently.

Since MPlayer's servers are hosted in Hungary, I guess the CSS decryption restrictions do not apply to it, so it supports CSS encrypted DVDs out of the box. :D
