Hey everyone. I'm a complete newb when it comes to linux. I'm so used to installing drivers on windows and have no idea how to install the drivers for me geforce 4 ti4600 card in mandrake linux 8.2. If someone can write a quick step by step, it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you read the README at nVidia's site? It's pretty good at explaining what to do.

This one http://mdkxp.by-a.com/htm/tutorials/nvidiacli.php always works for me.

For some reason I could not get my card to work with MDK 8.2
I did everything except creating syslinks. I guess they're not right in 8.2 for some reason.
I just installed RH 8.0 hoping to have better luck and to try a different distro (8.0 and 8.1 worked fine with my nvidia card and visa versa) and installed the drivers, followed the nvidia instructions and worked the first time :)

Thanks Ennead and all others. Krycheck, you should try the link that Ennead gave. It is really good.

What errors are you getting? Quoting them exactly will help quite a bit.

When you login at the commandline and type

startx

what errors do you get?

Did you follow the instructions either from the nvidia readme or the links posted above?

Are you installing the source rpm (src.rpm), binary rpm (i#86.rpm) or by source code (tar.gz) packages?

I've seen many posts here in the last few weeks on others having problems with Mandrake 9.0 and the nvidia drivers.

A forum search should find those for you and may give you the answer.

Also, there aren't currently any binary rpm's (i#86.rpm) that will work with Mandrake 9.0. nVidia hasn't built them yet. You'll have to go with either .src.rpm or .tar.gz. I like .tar.gz better for these, because it's easier (to me) to upgrade them when the next release comes out, but YMMV.
