It all depends on your player. Some can be mounted as a disk. Others have programs to upload and delete music. Others just don't have support. Chances are it attaches via usb. This is a good site for linux usb support info http://www.linux-usb.org/

Linux and portable MP3 players

Anyone who enjoys MP3s also knows the joys of having a tiny, Chiclet-size portable MP3 player so they can listen to their music on the road. Such users don't have to give up these portables if Linux is their primary desktop.

Through Linux's USB support or via a PC Card adapter, a user can easily move songs from a laptop or desktop to the player. There are a few caveats, however. A few players (mostly earlier players such as the RCA Lyra) will only take songs from their own file-transfer software, which is usually Windows-only. Also, it may be difficult to upgrade a player's firmware using Linux.

I'll see if this problem has found a solution yet.

One problem with the Lyra is it isn't an MP3 player. It actually does some additional encoding before it transfers the files onto the player. The player itself will not play ordinary MP3s. I had this player a while ago. There was a lyraforlinux group trying to reverse-engineer the software, but, as far as I know, they disappeared.
