i'm trying to configure my via8233 onboard soundcard. i've followed the usual directions, but i can't figure out how to unmute. when i try to use the 'amixer' command, the shell (whether i'm logged in as root or a user) says "command not found." i tried to do a find for amixer, but couldn't come up with anything. i'm running mandrake 9.0 -- what else can i try? MP3s play well, but i get no CD audio sound.

gmix (gui mixer panel)
kmix (gui mixer panel)
aumix (console mixer)
Hopefully you have one of those. If the CD is already turned up, make sure the wire connecting the CD player to the sound card is connected.

Hint
cd /usr/bin
ls *mix*

many thanks! found the GUI mixers, and everything is unmuted, but still no CD sound. CD works in windows, so it's back to the drawing board.

I would check the wire from the CD player directly to the sound card. In window, this direct link is obviously not required since my wife's computer doesn't have that cable connected, but Linux needs it.
