this is an honest question, im not trying to pirate movies, as i see so many get flames for asking. How do i make a DVD that will play on someones DVD player? From what i gather the format is mp4, or mp2, it just slipped out of my head. Now i know the obvious like "you need a DVD burner" but do you know of any programs that i can get, preferably for linux to create my own DVDs.

Also what are the best video editing tools for Linux? Mac's ship with some pretty sweet software and i was wondering where i could get there equivalents if any exist.

I do have a motive behind all this but if i carry through with it all or not is a different story. Right now im just gathering info.

Have a look around the change logs etc. on www.kernel.org as I believe DVD writing is only included in the development (2.5 series) kernel which should make it to the 2.6 stable kernel series due out at the end of the year.

as for the encoding to dvd you can take a look at transcode (http://www.theorie.physik.uni-goettingen.de/~ostreich/transcode/)

transcode code was one of the sites i was looking for. I have actually been there before just forgot the name. I can't seem to find something like iMovie for Linux. I know there is a good equivalent somewhere.
