I was going to post what I learned about making dosemu work for 16 bit DPMI, using DOS 6.22 files and the bootdir method, running within linux, not on a separate partition. I don't have many DOS programs, but believe it will generally run DOS stuff. Qbasic runs gorilla really nice, for example

But, I see the length limit, and I am simply not going to rewrite detailed instructions suitable for totally bewildered first time users of dosemu, to try to make them short, that is, as useless as most dosemu docs.

I notice there is an option below to attach files. I am going to try that, since it has a longer limit.

The 1998 (?) dosemu docs that come with Redhat and Mandrake dosemu talk about files that aren't there, and commands that aren't there any more, thus making it hard to follow. And, most google hits are more of the same. Dosemu has come a long ways, and the docs have not kept up.

I do not mean to be critical, since the best innovators are often not the best tech writers -- nor should they be. In fact, my goal is to try to help out by writing instructions for one method of using dosemu, so the rawest newbie should be able to do it. With this experience, it should be possible to advance rapidly. I am going to work next on DR-DOS running within linux.

So, if anyone wants DETAILED instructions on using dosemu by installing DOS 6.22 in a bootdir directory, and the attachment function doesn't work, send me a request at:

brucemcgovern@earthlink.net

Be sure to say what you want from me, (Jump in the lake is not a choice :-) because I get a lot of mail on different topics.

Be aware that this means you need a licensed copy of Dos 6.22, though most of the Dos after 3.31, except I am told, 4.xx, will apparently work.

Instructions also tell how to make the CD work, if it works in your linux distro.

I have sent the instructions to just one person, just last night, and today he already had it working, except for sound. I like peace and quiet, so don't mess with sound.

Great job irlandes.

I'm actually planning to try dosemu again one day (did a year or so ago) and will certainly bookmark your thread.

Thanks...
