Has anyone used Firestarter as their firewall software and if so, how user friendly is it for a Linux (MDK 9.0) newbie? I'm currently an XP user with Zone Alarm as my firewall. Any help would be appreciated.

I gave it a try a few weeks back and kept it. EASY to add single trusted machines, total block of ports (akthough I never trust technology and manually added the ports I worry about, just to be sure). Just remember, when you change preferences, re-run the wizard to make them permanent. hlrguy Note: Redhat 7.0, Version 0.8.2 of firestarter. Newer version exist, but too many dependancies for a 4 year old OS. cre8tiv_pgmr 10-18-2002, 09:58 AM Ok.........Now that I've chosen Firestarter to be my new firewall, which, from the list below, is the right download? I've got MDK 9.0. Firestarter 0.9.0 (GNOME 2) Firestarter 0.8.3 (GNOME 1.2) Red Hat 7-8 RPM X X Source tarball X X Source RPM X X MD5 checksums X X Debian DEB Maintained by Ryan M. Golbeck hlrguy 10-18-2002, 11:15 AM I would try the version 0.9.0 since Mandrake 9.0 uses Gnome2. It is not large, so download the i386 RPM first, and give it a try. hlrguy grminalac 10-21-2002, 01:51 PM I do not think Firestarter would be the best choise for Mandrake 9 as Firestarter uses IPchains exclusively. I would reccomend guarddog firewall. It is easy to use and has a good menu driven front end that allows you to configure zones and access. Note: Guard dog does not include advanced routing features, it is only a firewall so you will need to configure NAT or apply an IP MASQ. I used guidedog for the IP masq it worked well. johnwebb 10-21-2002, 02:27 PM I have Firestarter installed on my RedHat 8.0 box which uses iptables. I'm not sure about other distibutions but previous RedHat versions did come with ipchains enabled by default. You could use iptables if you first disabled ipchains and then enabled iptables. I used Firestarter this way with RedHat 7.2. I never used GuardDog but it looks like KDE is required. I would be interested in any clarification to this. justlinux.com
