What is the equivalent in linux of the "windows media player"?
In other words I
want to be able to play a .asx file using netscape. What plug in or
program do
I need to play such a file, which under windows it is called "windows
media

What is the equivalent in linux of the "windows media player"?There isn't one. Microsoft makes up their own crap instead of following standards therefore making it harder for other platforms to support their media.
Media players for Linux that come to mind are xine, mplayer, vlc, avifile/avi-xmms.
Nothing I'm aware of will actually stream avi's from a "mms:", but you can just download the stream using asfrecorder. Type "asfrecorder linux" into google to find a copy, even rpms are available I just noticed.
asx is just a text file with a simple scripting language and links to avi/asf/wmv etc.., just download the asx file and open it in a text editor, copy out the url, feed it into asfrecorder if it's a stream it will probably work, if it's not a stream you can just download it normally.
Since wmv's aren't really common I've only tried this a couple times but I rename the extension to avi and so far they've always played.
I use the avi-xmms plugin and it's been pretty good to me so far. It turns xmms into something that's similar to "windows media player" in terms of compatability. It actually plays video's better especially imperfect ones and I can also play avi/asf files while they're still downloading. Try that with windows media player :)
