No DSL yet but coming soon hopefully. In the meantime, i was wondering what kind of router i should start looking for? I need a 4-Port DSL/CABLE router. DirecTV is going to send me a gateway in about 2 weeks. I want the router to share my connection w/ my 2 other computers. Which router is the easiest to use for a reasonable price? Ive seen Netgear's 314 but thats a little bit old. I want new technology. I asked some reliable people about that router and they said other routers do some things automatically that that router requires manual configurations for it to work. They said it was easy, but still...i want the new stuff. :) . Now i know the Linksys router is awesome but I cant seem to find a place that offers it for a reasonable price. My range is from FREE-$45(shipped). Any suggestions? I know of one place that has a good deal...im not sure though. Can you guys check it out:

Is D-LINK DI-604 CABLE / DSL ROUTER WITH 4 PORT anygood?
http://www.enpc.com/cgi-bin/enpc/DI-604.html?id=ku3I8d9X
And what about HP HN200E Ethernet Gateway DSL or Cable Router with 4 Port Switch
http://www.microtechcomputers.com/product.asp?Sku=NRHP200E
Of the 3, which one would you recommend the most and why for the listed prices?
Thanks

I use a D-link, and it works wonderfully. Netgear is a good brand as well.

I have been using the same model d-link for about 5 months. I have not had a single problem. It is really easy to configure with some very robust features. The only thing I wish it had was a command line interface via a telnet session. Sometimes I wish I could do some configuration changes from work by telneting to my linux box and then telneting back to the router/switch. Other than that little feature missing, I cannot complain. Especially for less than $50.

Thats good to hear because thats most likely the one im going to buy. I dont really care or need the telnet feature. Ally my configuration is going to be done at home. But overall it's a stable router right? I hear that some routers will loose the ip for some reason and you have to reconfigure it...does this router have any of those problems? What about port forwarding, is that possible?
Thanks

Yeah...It does port forwarding. I've never experienced any problems with losing my IP address.

I use the exact same setup . A D-Link DI604 and a Directv DSL gateway . Works great on every flavor of Linux ive tried . I got the DI 604 because it was cheap . I did the firmware upgrade and it works great as a firewall too .

SWEET. So it works w/ linux, directv DSL, and has Port Forwarding for only $40? Im sold. Ordering right now. :) I was a little bit scared it didnt have port forwarding because i want my http requests to go to my linux box. Now that i know it does, im relieved. ;)
Thanks

I am not sure why it is getting bad reviews. Like I said I have not had any problems.
Good luck. I got a minor in Computer Science which means squat.

Right now, im trying to transfer to UCSD and study computer science. I cant answer that question either . Like I said , ive got one and I love it . best 42 bucks I ever spent . I get 159kbps through it on a download at a good site . I have my triple boot XP , RH8.0 , MDK9.0 box on it and my moms WinXP box on it . It was easy to set up and the security is tighter than a dixie hatband , according to GRC and Blackcode port scanners . I say buy it and try . If you dont like it you can return it .

The reason I went with the D-link is because I bought a flat panel iMac for my wife and it got better reviews for the Mac than the other brands. I have a friend who uses the Linksys Wireless AP /4 port Switch and he has not had any problems.

Oh for sure. Im not doubting you guys about the D-Link. Im sure its just as good(if you know what your doing and manufacture damage is excluded). I mean, any piece of hardware can be a DOA, new or used. And you can have the best piece of hardware, or the most expensive piece of hardware and it will still not function properly, or it will for a while and then break. Im just saying that Linksys had less "cons" than D-link. These "cons" dont affect me but its not like im paying for the Linksys router anyways. My dad is paying for it. :)
Thanks for the help/info. ;)

Do yourself a favor and see if there are any security issues with the Linksys as there was earlier in the year. I remember going to best buy and seeing like 8 opened linksys firewall routers that had been returned for sale.
The D-link issues people had were probably user error.

I did some research about the security issues and found that they changed it for the better in V2. I do know that it's not as rich as d-link. D-link has more than just on/off feature for security.
thanks.
