I've just installed Slackware 8.0 on my old PC for school. I would like to know why I have to use a Slackware LILO Boot Disk when booting up my PC. Some other class mates tell me they don't need a Boot disk to get in their Slackware. Here's some info on my PC...

NEC PowerMate P166
6.4 Gig HDD (Primary IDE Master)
2.5 Gig HDD (Secondary IDE Slave)
52x CDROM (Primary IDE Slave)

/dev/hda1 2000M Linux native (mount as /)
/dev/hda2 256M Linux swap
/dev/hda3 2000M Linux native (mount as /home)
/dev/hda4 rest of drive space - Linux native (mount as /usr)
/dev/hdb5 1250M Linux native - (mount as /var)
/dev/hdb6 1250M Linux native - (mount as /temp)

This PC has only Linux Slackware 8.0 installed on it & nothing else.

Everything works, but I like to know why I need a LILO Boot Disk, instead of booting from the HDD?
Thanks,
:)

During the install process, where did you allow Lilo to be installed to... mbr or hda1 '/' ?

If hda1, then you will probably need to use i.e. fdisk and set that partition as active.

If not, then please let us know where you did install Lilo and also post your /etc/lilo.conf
