I've recently aquired a rather new mobo - don't remember the specs though, I'm at work. It's a motherboard which holds a 1 Gigahertz Athlon processor. I'm gonna use it to build a quick system and I have everything together.
Can I use an older power supply for this? I have an old PCCHIPS TXProII mobo with a 133 Mhz Cyrix proc in an old system. Can I use the power supply from that tower to power my new motherboard?
Those whith whom I've already spoken say that if the power supply plugs into the mobo properly, it'll work (the new board takes one of those plugs which looks like an oversized IDE plug).
Is this proc too new to take power from an old source?
thanks y'all

heh, I WISH! No, older power supplies are usually not compatible with newer platforms, for one reason or another. The biggest reason is probably how much power. Athlons & P4s take a _lot_ more power than their K6-IIx and P3 counterparts.
It also sounds like you probably have an old AT power supply, which probably doesn't even have the ATX connector (or whatever the name is of the connector that comes with ATX power supplies), so it definitely wouldn't work. I never owned a Cyrix so I'm not sure, but I don't think your PS would work.
There are also different ATX specifications (like, mine is 2.03), and I think AMD requires like 2.01 or above or something, I'm not really quite sure.

My first guess is that the PS will not work. If it has the proper mating connector then it probably should work. The other factor is how many watts is the old power supply. My second guess would be something around 230 - 250 watts. I would want something a little bigger like 300 - 350.

Be careful if anything came from a Dell. I saw an article where they have non-standard wiring but the plugs fit.

You will need a newer ATX type power supply most likely. http://www.directron.com or http://www.monarchcomputer.com are both real good places to deal with. You can check them out at http://www.resellerratings.com
