I am trying to install this awesome app called checkinstall (since I am usually mixing up rpms and source files when installing), but.. I need a little tool called rpmbuild. It seems that belongs to the rpm package itself.. but for some odd reason I don't have it. So I was wondering what's the name of the package/file/program that I need to seek for? I've done searches on sourceforge and freshmeat, and I just found 'alternate' programs that do the same, but I need the one called rpmbuild. Do I go and install 'rpm' to get it?

According to http://www.redhat.com/software/linux/technical/packages.html rpm-build should be on one of the Redhat cd's.

Well... what I have are the seven cd's for Suse 8.0.. I guess I'll just go dig into them and see if I find it.
If I just have not broken Yast2.. I would be able to open it's software manager and just look for the package.. and install Gnome, and Galeon... it would be much easier. As it is.. I don't have Yast, so can I even claim to have Suse? Well.. enough chatting, time to go hunt that rpm!

I thought rpm-build was something new only for Redhat. Sorry as I posted a Redhat link.

If rpm-build is supposed to be included with SuSE, then I would think it's somewhere on the cd's or downloadable from their ftp servers.

Gee this is annoying. Searched through 7 cd's to not find it? The only packages that I found were rpmfind-1.6-362.i386.rpm, rpm2html-1.5-289.i386.rpm and rpm-3.0.6-278.i386.rpm... leaving aside the fact that they are pretty outdated, would any of these 'include' rpmbuild? Gee why can't I get that program from anywhere?

EDIT: Well.. it's all solved... or 'kinda'. All I can say is... rpmfind.net is going to my bookmarks.. if you like installing from rpm's, then that site is for you. Unfortunately I need to update my rpm system to install the rpm-build program and now I have like 16 more dependencies to install... it's gonna be a long night...

Err... is rpmbuild a 'recent' command? I got sick tired of seeking for this file everywhere without finding it... I downloaded one called rpm-build-3.0.6-6x.i386.rpm, and after installing it.. it did not give me the rpmbuild command!? My rpm version is 3.0.6... I went to the rpm.org's ftp site (hell if they don't have it, noone does!) and because I did not wanted to get a lot of dependency problems, I went into my version's directory and got the rpm-development file.. installed it... and I still don't have the rpmbuild command!!! What gives? What's the name of the package that brings rpmbuild? The different packages I can get from the ftp site are:
popt
rpm
rpm-build
rpm-devel
rpm-python
the only ones I have not installed yet are popt and python.. but those cannot be the ones.... Hmm... do I need to update my rpm version to get the rpmbuild command!?
