How, with what software, do you create a message board that I can publish on my site so friends and family can correspond? I want to basically create a message board like this one, live, with Q&A etc...

Just search GOOGLE for free message board scripts it will come up with links to free cgi or perl scripts!

You would probably want to checkout something like phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/) or maybe yabb (http://yabb.xnull.com/), they're both free bulletin board 'systems' based on PHP and/or Perl. If you're not interested so much in running your own server or finding a host to post your bb for you, you might just head over to freeservers.com (http://www.freeservers.com). It's free to setup and have a website there, and they do have a basic bulletin board system that you can build onto your site, preconfigured and pretty simple to use, from the looks of it. Enjoy!

Take a look at http://www.ikonboard.com

They make a great free product that is pearl based. I used it on my own personal site (unfortunately my cable isp now has a filter in place to stop any http server from being reached from the outside..... thanks to the code red II worm).
