I'm a brand new Linux rookie and just installed Red Hat 7.3 from a 3-CD set included in a book entitled THE RED HAT LINUX 7.3 BIBLE. I also have WinXP installed. When I re-booted and used GRUB to log into Linux, everything seemed to load well until my monitor started flickering over and over. It wouldn't stop flickering and also would not proceed further towards a log-in or desktop. I guess I need to do some work in something called Xconfigurator??? I re-booted and I can get to the line-by-line prompt that says GRUB> (with a light, sky-blue background and the Red Hat symbol) but no matter what I type here after the prompt of GRUB>, it returns an error. I used TAB and tried all the listed words and none will get me to Xconfigurator. Even ROOT won't work and I KNOW I set myself up with an ID and password in ROOT during the install.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I have a 17inch Viewsonic monitor, an ATI 9000 32mb video card, two hard drives (Linux is installed on the second HD), 512k of memory, a 1.7 Ghz Pentium 4 chip, and I'm supposed to be running a dual boot using GRUB. Currently, I can log into Win XP with no problems...if you need any more info, please let me know. I'm anxious to star learning all about Linux...

It sounds as if you chose a gui login and don't have x configured correctly.

Try control-alt-F3 and see if you can get a virtual terminal login. Login as root and command init 3 and reconfigure x.

Does your video card need a driver?

O.K. At what point should I do the Ctrl-Alt-F3?

I just noticed you rebooted and just have a grub prompt, so apparently grub is misconfigured as well.

I think I saw a post here where someone used the Windows XP bootloader to load Linux.

Try a board search for that post.
