Hello. Its me again. I am really screwed. I have to re-install my system again http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif
Why? you ask. Well because i screwed up on the partition part. I need help with the following questions:
1.How much partitions i need?
2.How much swap space is necesary for a 1.2Gb hd, 200Mhz and 128Mb Ram?
3.What should i install? Libraries etc..
Note: I want my computer for imaging, internet and harmless hacking?
4.I have RedHat 6.0. What should i upgrade?
My current system info:
hda1 / 350MB , 188MB used
hda5 /usr 458MB , 415MB Used
--------------------------------
Please help me!!!! I beg u all. I want to do things right. Thankx

You need a native /
For 128 MB ram, make it 256 MB swap.
Boot partition about 16 MB /boot
I personally would upgrade to RH 6.2.
If you're not using servers, don't install any servers.
Install the GUI you want to use.

Another question. When i complie software, where is it complied?
Example:

I thought the Maximum swap is supposed to be twice your ram till a maximum of 128!!! Isn't it wright?

Its a matter of opinion, but common thought states that its twice RAM size. The swap space used to be a maximum of 128 Meg's per partition but that was resolved in later kernels, maybe that was the reason behind the arugment.

You should go get RH 7. I got it and installed Linux the first try. It's not that hard if you have a clue about partitions and even if you don't you can let it do it for you. I don't know anything yet about Linux except that RH7 went in very easy and use KPPP to set up your internet acct. It's cake. Now I'm trying to do the more involved stuff like get my web cam to work etc...

with 128M you need no swap at all.
Maybe an 8M swap file or 800K just to
give you a warm fuzzy feeling.
1.2G is probably a bit small for imaging,
esp if you drop rh onto it.
I am serious about the swap space, chances are you will never ever see it being used and you can use that to hold your system.

If you HD is primary/master, and you are using the whole drive for Linux, why not just create '/' and 128MB swap. You will not really need the /boot partition as it will reside on '/'.
I always just use the two.
