I am a Linux newbie as you guys probably all know from my questions, but so far I AM LOVING IT!!! I say right now that Bill Gates can suck a donkey flop for all I care! I am sticking w/ good ol X, and KDE!!!

Ok how many of you run CS on WineX/WINE??? For those of you who do, and run KDE, what shortcut do you use... For example I use "wine '/home/bob/.wine/fake_windows/Sierra/Counter-Strike/cstrike.exe'"
I used to in d0ze use various options at the end of the "cstrike.exe -nointro -nojoy -noipx -console" I want to know how I can use these various options when starting the .exe in wine... Also I would like to know some more of these options at the end of the cstrike.exe to improve preformance. Even though my specs might seem a little high, I am a space freak, and memory freak...

Athlon XP 2200
512 DDR
Geforce 2 mx 200 64 MB SDRAM PCI (Severe bottlenecking, I know... I hopefully can afford a ti 4200 soon...)
ECS K7S5A (With modified o/c bios)
27 gig Quantum HDD

-nojoy specifies that there is no joystick, so CS or HL saves a tiny bit of miniscule memory

-noipx says there is no ipx network present, a memory saver...

-nointro just passes the BS, even though in WineX I dont get the intro screen

-console does what you expect it would do

Shortcuts? Shortcuts? We don't need no stinkin' shortcuts!

Seriously.

I run it from a terminal (that way Wine's output doesn't clutter up my console -- if you run it from a shortcut, everything that Wine normally prints goes instead to the VT that you started X from), with wine --winver=win98 -- hl.exe -dev -console -zone 4096 -game cstrike

Everything after the -- in the command line (except for hl.exe) gets passed to hl as command line options. So that's one way to do what you want...

I will probably just create a shell script for this, but I bought the retail version of Counter-Strike, because I am stupid, but I have a HL iso that I *acquireed* The CS cdkey, and the HL cdkeys are the same, but nyhow...

for exampe for me it would be 'wine --winver=win98 --cstrike.exe -dev -console -noipx -nojoy -nointro'?

Thx again Bwkaz!!!

this is strange, but for me instead of using '-dev' for example, I have to use just 'dev' I will just create a shell script for it though, and place it in my home directory, cause it's a lot easier. Thx for your great help once again!!!

If I want to run a CS server, and just a server on my computer, do I need a CD-KEY for that computer too? I will use my current as a client, and the other for the server. Will CS allow me to do this, or do I need a free CD-Key? Thx

I don't believe servers need CD keys, though I could be wrong. You could always just try it and see... ;)

http://server.counter-strike.net/ for some info/tutorials/whatever on installing the Linux dedicated server. Note that the Linux port of the server is a completely separate .tar.gz package that you can get from somewhere on counter-strike.net; that's what makes me think you don't need a key for it.

I play DoD, and admin the Elend (now Tanelorn) servers. I use the following shell script (from within my Waimea/fluxbox menu):
#!/bin/sh
cd ~/.winex/fake_windows/Sierra/Counter-Strike
winex --winver=win98 -- cstrike.exe -nojoy -noipx -console -numericping -game dod

I haven't tried playing under Linux since the Valve Anti-Cheat came out, though. I heard that it had problems with clients running under WineX. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Hope to see some Linux folks in game... the name's Locke[OwP]

No problems with authentication. I played yesterday, day before etc. With WineX 2.1 built from CVS.

I have one more question...

Do you guys think the following system is worthy of being a CS server, just a server! With Windows 2000 on it, with Counter-Strike, and nothing else...

450 mhz P3 processor
128 SDRAM
17 gig 5400 RPM HDD
ATI Rage 2 vidcard

I think it should be able to handle it fairly well...
Remember it JUST has win2000 CS, and some admin mod stuff on it! I am wondering, because me and my friends just built it yesterday from our spare parts around.

Right, recent WineX builds are OK with the VAC stuff.

That machine would be an OK server, I think, as long as you didn't have too many people on the maps. But why run 2K on it? Why not the Linux dedicated server? I would think the lack of a GUI with Linux (obviously you wouldn't install X) would make the server run faster than if the box had to run 2K's GUI-enabledness at the same time...

My friend that is a d0ze man, is the person who would rather have win 2000, than RH, Slack, Debian, Mandrake, SuSe, etc. No matter how "easy" they are, they arent as easy as windows, and everyone knows that. He admits he's too lazy to run any form of *nix. I forgot to mention the server is at his house. BTW my other friend just stayed the night, and at 8:30 when he woke my *** up, his mom brought me a free 128 SDRAM stick, that I asked for. (She works at a comp. place, and they all run M$...) So I stuck in the ****, and soon I was playing from my house on my comp. With the HLDS at his house running. Here is the servers specs...

P3 450 mhz
196 DIMM SDRAM
ATI Rage 2
17 gig 5400 rpm HDD
Running M$ win 2000 (ummm how can I say it "coorperate edition" I believe, if you know what I mean...)

Cable connection shared 3 way over router at his house, but only 2 way right now. His parents comp is basically used just for WWW browsing. So we had the 1 comp idle, and the other running the HLDS

Only one hitch: myeastern cable service, formerly eastern@home is capped at 1.5mb d/l 128k u/l... Thats not too good to run a server on, but I was playing with 5 other peeps, and it was ok.

If it was my machine, the M$ disc would be frisbee'd into my neighbors yard, and a fresh RH install not including X, or any GUI desktop would be on there. We now have enough memory for the server, but If we had 256k u/l I would be a happy camper.

On top of that, when his dad came home, he saw the computer and told him no deals. My friend isn't exaclty the best in the "communication arts," but we might have a slight chance in keeping it at his house. He wants it at my place soaking up my bandwith, but I told him to **** himself, because My dad is always downloading gross rotton.com style video's, and my brother is on his gay AIM, while going kazaa crazy, ON THE COMPUTER OF HIS THAT I BUILT!!! Ahh life is kinda hard being a teenager, and on top of that my friend might have to explain about the scratch on his fathers car that he did, while I was eating some Spice Drops inside his house. We went driving yesterday, but today his dumbass was way overconfident, with my other friend there... (*cough* DUMBASS!!!) So if his dad finds the scratch, which he probably will, not only is he gonna throw the server off the second story of his house, but probably my friends comp too.

If I do get it, do you have ny idea's what a man could do with a comp like that??? I am kinda thinking FTP server for me and my friends, but I dont really know what else, mayb mp3 machine... I dunno it's up in the air right now, cause I dont know if he can keep it or not. But if I do get it, I might just gut the *****, and hook my parents and my bro up w/ more memory. The thing is, it's my friends HDD, and PSU!!! AHH I just turned 15, what am I to do??? lol

Oh, OK, if it's at his house, then I guess you have an excuse. ;)

What to do with it? Hmm... yeah, Ogg/Vorbis server sounds good. Get the soundcard working (it does have one, right?) and just let it sit there and play Vorbis audio all day.

*note: Vorbis because the people that came up with MP3 have started to charge for not only the encoder software, but also all decoders. Which they can do, because they own the patent, but it's still not nice. There are no patents with Vorbis, and IMHO it sounds a lot better at the same "bitrate". Of course, bit rate isn't the only deciding factor (Vorbis uses VBR by default, so the bit rate actually changes as the file is playing) of quality, but it's a decent one.

The_Drake_Noob

MP3 patent **** is getting sooo bad that RH decided to not even include mp3 support in their newest release 8.0!!! I have heard Vorbis kicks mp3's arse, but does it have better compression??? Most people say the sound quality ranges from slightly better, to 17 0wnz0rz t3h S0unD50rz, lol. If I convert my mp3's to Vorbis, will they lose quality? I am sure they can't get any better quality from converting from mp3's, right? And if I were to start a server, should I make it FTP, IRC, what? probably FTP would be the best choice, but whats a good server?

Thx again,
The_Drake_Noob

You shouldn't loose anything from converting mp3 to ogg...it is a bummer that RH didn't include mp3 support, but at least it is a quick patch to install it.

BTW, the latest WineX can run Counter-Strike on any server so you don't need to hunt for "unsecure" servers anymore

Vorbis has better compression at the same "quality". Basically, this means you can get the same "quality" sound at a slightly lower bit rate (bit rate is what determines compression).

However, you will probably have to actually use a higher bit rate Vorbis if you're reencoding from MP3. The problem is that both compression schemes throw audio away, but they throw different things out. So if you try to recreate the original sound from your MP3s, it will be missing some data (which normally isn't all that bad). Then, when you recompress that sound into Vorbis, the encoding process will throw out even more of it, making the perceived "quality" lower.

You'll get better results re-encoding from the original CD than trying to convert, I think.

A good server? What do you want to do? FTP servers aren't bad, just make sure you stay current so some script kiddie won't be able to crack your box through your old FTP server. ssh is cool as well -- it allows a remote login encryped with SSL. But make sure your openssl and openssh packages also stay up to date, for the same reason.

A web server is also pretty cool, if you have an always-on connection to the Internet. Web servers over dial-up probably aren't the best thing to do. I've never run an IRC server, but that would be pretty cool -- create a channel (you can do that, right? I should really learn more about IRC) and talk to each other there. Or mirror #grasshoppers or #lno or whatever the LNO IRC channel is (assuming you can do things like that... again, I don't know how IRC works).

Thanks for your help once again... I understood what you said about the bit rate before, and about compression, but thanks for clarifying. SSH sounds pretty cool, although I need to learn more about it. Hey I am a former M$ user  GRRR the name makes me cringe! But I will look up some wonderful linux documentation, and an SSH HOWTO.

My friend might be able to keep it. We have yet to install admin-mod, but hopefully my friend can do that (I installed the server, and then I went home, and he opened up some weird port. Note that the port was not 27015 the default HL server and client, but rather a strange mofo...) I am excited, and if you play CS, I would like to play with you, and everyone else. Just chillin right now listning to some Marley, Jammin, Stir it up, Get up Stand up, Exodus, etc. No I am not a pothead, but I enjoy music I can relax to, and Marley's songs did that for the entire world! No matter what mood I am in Marleys songs have a a positive impact on me, even if I am in a rage, or depressed. Yah maybe we can play some CS if you want... Um where do u live and what connection, then I will prolly post the IP so we can be playing. BTW my alias is 'CockAzN' for CaucAzN, but CockAzN just to be ignorant. I just got sick of the AzN this, and AzN that, lol... So lets play a game shall we?

ssh isn't useful for a whole lot, other than remote access to a box. So actually, it may not be all that great, unless you've got other programs on that box that you want to run remotely to impress people. Or whatever. ;)

I used to play CS, but I haven't in quite a while. I live out in the middle of nowhere (Houghton, MI, at the moment), but I'm at Michigan Tech University, so I've got a usually-decent connection (100K/sec is just about the bandwidth limit). Sometimes the latency gets bad, though, which was why I stopped playing in the first place (well, that and the fact that I couldn't play in secured servers for quite some time -- but I can now, so it's all good).

If class work allows, I'll see if I can get something set up and working (client-side, with Winex or whatever). But the "if class work allows" part of that is the catch, of course...

I'll play some CS with you. I run a CS server too, and an FTP server.

Admin-Mod
HLGuard
Chicken MOD
ATAC

and various other scripts...

Thats awesome... Whats the ip of your FTP and CS servers??? I would really like to play some CS with some linux peoples, because I like to talk a lot when I play, and for a linux -newbie, it would be cool. Um your FTP server is anonymous right? What kind of things do u have on that bad boy, linux??? If you would prefer not to discuss the content, due to numerous reasons u could just give me a l/p and whoosh... I have windows things, some movies, and things I would not like to say on this forum... So whats the IP's, and thx for the offer!

HERE's my badass sys:
