I installed Mandrake 9.0 on one machine in my network. I can see the box from my WinXP machine in the network neighborhood. Here are my problems:

1) Sharing a folder from Linux - In Gnome, I went to a folder and shared it out using Nautilus. Easy enough, seemed to work. But when I try to browse to that folder from the WinXP machine, it stops and asks me to login with a username and password.

I tried all the usernames and passwords I setup on the linux box, but it doesn't accept them. Alternately, it tries to log me in by placing the computername of the WinXP box in front of the login, like this:

MyXPBox/MyLoginName

I also tried prefixing with the name of the Linux box, but nothing seems to work. Why can't I login? How do I do this?

2) I have a printer setup and working locally usings CUPS on the Linux box. When I try to setup a new printer on the WinXP machine, again, it sees the Linux box, but does not display the printer. I can't seem to hook up to it. What am I missing?

I tried going into the network configuration utility and adding an allow for 192.168.1 anywhere I saw the oppurtunity to, and also added browse=true wherever I saw it, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Can anyone assist me?

Thanks!

just a guess. try adding the winxp box's user name and password to the linux box.

i agree but you probably also need to do smbpasswd for the new user you create that matches the one for the xp box.

smbpasswd username
