From my previous question.
I started RH 6.2 inst. CD and got to "where" to install Linux.
The Drive Summary screen shows:
Drive = hda
Total = 19092
Free = 9554
Used = 9538
Used % = 49%
As you can see this is a "dual-boot" setup with Win98SE already installed.
The "Partition" shows:
Mount Point = ??? [This is what I need to know]
Device = hda1
Actual = 9538m
Type = WIN 98 FAT 32
Some of my choices for "mount point" are
/ (root)
/boot
/usr
/home
/usr/local
To me, the choice should be "/boot". From what "little" I understand about Linux this would make Win98SE the "default" bootup with Red Hat 6.2 as the "option".
Is this correct ?? and is "/boot" the mount point to choose ??
I had exceptional difficulty partitioning this HD so I don't want to mess up, because the manual does not show any way to "uninstall" Red Hat.

You don't want to mount your Windows filesystem into a existing Linux system mountpoint.
Most distros mount external filesystems into /mnt. i.e. /mnt/windows

From your previous post, it seems that you have one primary partition (where winblows is) on your box. You need to create at least another partition to install linux. I would suggest a logical partition instead of another primary partition.
This can be done using Partition Magic or Ranish etc. As mentioned previously, you will have problems with your boot loader as the version of the LILO that comes with RH6.2 probably has not overcome the 1024th cylinder restriction yet i.e. the boot loader must be installed in a partition that is within the first 8 Gig of the hard disk. Try downloading the latest version if you can.
When you get past all these, the easiest (though not an ideal one) partitioning scheme to start with is to just have a /boot and a / (root).
Hope this helps! :D

trekker,
Thanks for your response,
Actually I started with Mandrake 8.2 which I installed but found I had many "missing packages" resulting in no sound and no modem. Presently Mandrake is UNINSTALLED !
I had bought a Linux manual which is very good for step-by-step Gnome operation. The manual included a "free CD" with Red Hat 6.2 (I'm really not interested in a "newer" version of RH) But I am trying to install 6.2 on my "backup" comp. (NEC 166 MHz) hoping it will help me understand Mandrake and get it up and running again.

trekker,
"I meant try a later version of the boot loader." I'm not sure what a later version of the boot loader means ??
fancypiper [see my Q. Red Hat 6.2 Load Failure] gave me several good links about partitioning that I have not had time to read yet due to some household "chores".
One thing I learned is there is such a thing as TOO big a partition for Linux and that RH 6.2 needs to be in the first 8 gigs of the HD. Next time I partition it will be 5 gigs Linux & 15 gigs Win98SE.
Do you know I have gone from "Junior Grasshopper" to "Grasshopper" and still don't have an operational Linux system.

Kinda hard for vBulletin to be able to tell how much actual Linux knowledge you have.
Some LNO members have hundreds of posts and still know very little. :) Uh-oh...
