I have installed UT on my Windows XP partition but would like to play it from Linux as well. Is there any way to do that without installing it twice? I know that the majority of the files are maps/textures/music/etc. that shouldn't need to be copied twice. I realize I'll need to install the linux binaries.

Would it be possible to install it on Linux & replace the Maps/Textures/Music/Sounds/System folders with symbolic links to the install on my Windows partition? Is there some other way that would make more sense?

Perhaps LNO members that hang out in the Linux Games forum will be able to help.

Are you low on space that you don't want to install it? Or are you like me and don't like having 2 of the same thing :)

I would just install it if there is enough space. It would be interesting to try the symlinks to see what happens...that might even be a possible idea, but it would be a pain to set up all those links...

It wouldn't be too much of a pain if you used the lndir command to create the directories...

man lndir

In case anyone was wondering, replacing a Linux UT install with links to a Windows install does present a very minor performance hit for the first few seconds of the game. After the links have been resolved, however, it plays normally. It's definatly worth saving the 1 gig+ I saved thanks to the hoard of custom maps I have installed.

Providing links to files in /System without overwriting any of the existing files also gives you perfect access to any mods that are installed.

All in all, if space is a problem, this is a viable fix. I got a Linux UT install set up with under 100 megs that plays just as well as my 1 gig+ Windows install.

Actually, that's not quite true. I DID install the S3 textures into my Linux install (I use D3D in Windows, not OpenGL), so that added quite a bit of space, but there are still substantial space savings. The pretty graphics make it worth it...

in that case, install the S3TC Textures in windows and use the updated D3DDrv.dll that uses DirectX8 + DXTC
you can get the render from http://unreal.epicgames.com
