No, there are probably no free ISPs that can be used (legally) with Linux. They all require proprietary Windows-only software. There used to be a few, but 90% of all free Internet providers have gone out of business, and the very few that had Linux support were among that number.

That's not to say that it's impossible to get one of them to work in Linux -- it's just illegal, and if you get caught, they're perfectly within their legal rights to charge you $20/month for the entire time you've been using the service.

erm.....i just phoned my free isp (when i had a modem)and told them i was gonna install linux, they said ok we cant give you technical support but we'll give you everything you need, ie:dns numbers and you can do it yourself
they didnt say anything about it being illegal

Well, why don't you tell us what free ISP this is, so the rest of us can look into it? It's certainly in the minority.

How exactly are they going to make money off of your subscription if you don't run their proprietary Windows advertising software? Companies with no plans to actually turn a profit did fine until about a year ago, but since then they've taken a sharp nose-dive. I know there are some free ISPs that try to stay afloat not through advertising software but simply by selling your personal information to advertisers and marketing firms, but I can't imagine they're doing a very good job of making a profit either.
