How can I partition my drive without having to buy an 80.00 software program (Partition Magic). The distro I am using is Linux Mandrake 7.2 Power Pack (I bought it saturday). Please help me partition my drive without losing any data.

Here are some free partition managers you may want to check out: http://sourceforge.net/projects/partimage http://sourceforge.net/projects/surprise http://www.gnu.org/software/parted

Or, shareware:
http://www.zdnet.com and search for Partition Commander (29.95)

I don't know anything about them (reliability, etc), just that they are abailable. I use Partition Magic.

mandrake comes with a resizer called diskdrake

I know DiskDrake says it resizes, but when i was in (i am guessing diskdrake) and I clicked resize, it said data will be lost (all). And all the other sharewares, do they offer no data loss?

I personally don't like that practice, but it's better than cr :mad:ssp :mad:sting.

Actually the suggestion to try Gnu 'Parted' could be what you are looking for. It's supposed to be similar to Partition Magic and the price is right.

Okay, can Gnu Parted run in windows?

I'm not sure as I've never tried Parted.

Did you have a look to see what platforms it will run on? http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/

From what I can tell it runsonly on Linux, but it does say (and I quote)"Currently, Parted only runs under GNU/Linux. If you don't have GNU/Linux, then a boot disk image is available on all mirrors in the /gnu/parted/bootdisk directory.

So does this mean I an make a boot disk, then get into that once I boot my computer, and then make a ext2 partition?

Yes I believe it does.

Also keep www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com) handy. Great site that someone posted here.

Try this: www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/ (http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/)
It is the partition mamager i use , it is just as good as P.M. and you can use it in windows.
Cheers
