FTP, SSH (so I can remote in), Mail server, file server for my internal network, maybe Apache web server.
Thats it! I dont want a full blown installation of junk but I feel im too noobish to try a custom installation in any distro (experimented with RH 7.1 and Drake 8.0 already).
Any recommendations here on what to try, how to install a barebones installation, or whatever you can think of?
Thanks :)

Slackware or Debian is the easiest in terms of barebones installs in my experience. They are both excellent distros and both are very well documented on their web sites. I'd recommend them also since the install is somewhat automated but not too dumbed down at the same time.

I don't have much experience, but I can recommend that Slackware is a pretty easy to set up a bare install. Mandrake sort of loses it's purpose as a bare install.

 Debian
Debian works pretty nicely for a basic install. If there's stuff you don't want, apt-get remove it, if there's something thats not installed yet, apt-get install it. :)

i would also suggest slackware, perhaps zipslack. not sure about debian, never used it. or you could just do linux from scratch, and create your own.

Yea, but with LFS you need a working linux distro first
