Half life in linux

when i try and run half life, it tells me that i need to make the colors 16 bit. how do i do that? i have KDE on red hat 7.3

You need to update your version of Half-Life before it will run under Wine or WineX. Install the latest HL patch from a mirror somewhere.

and when you launch the game use the command
$ wine hl.exe --console

This takes care of a few starting errors...like the midi one you'll see later without it :)
