First of all, hello again. I've had a heck of a time re-registering since my account was killed. (But that's another story).
I recently purchased a laptop for school. I shopped around, read many reviews and decided on a Dell Inspiron 8000, especially since I'd read many people were able to install Linux and have everything work well.
Here are the specs:
Dell Inspiron 8000
15" SuperXGA Display (capable of 1400*1050)
16MB GeForce2 Go AGP
128MB RAM
Mobile Pentium III 800 Mhz
Slackware 8.0 - kernel 2.4.5
X 4.1.0
Et Cetera
Enough history, here's what's up. I've got everything working except for two things. X and Networking. (Networking is something I've never done in Slack, so I expected a challenge there). X on the other hand, I've always been able to get working, after a little bit of tweaking that is... :), but with this one, I'm having major problems. I followed the instructions from the Nvidia website for the linux drivers and they installed fine. The module is loaded at startup, but I'm unsure of what to do from there. Am I supposed to create my own XF86Config file myself? I tried some XF86Config files from some various personal websites, and they would do 1 of 2 things:
1) Various X errors - No Screens found, no valid Resolution. (Don't recall exact errors, and no I'm not at home)
2) X accepts my config, blanks the screen then I get either diagnol lines or horiz streaks, and then the entire screen gets lighter and lighter and... I panic and power off the laptop (for fear of damage).
Anyone out there with a similar system, issue, more of a clue than I have... Please, please help. I dual boot so I can use Visual Basic and play games, but I don't want to be stuck with windows...
Any and all help/replies, sympathy, whatever, I'll muchly appreciate.
Thanks again,
ille_pugil

Try running Xconfigurator, after filling in some information it should generate a working XF86Config file. Then you have to edit the XF86Config file so that it uses the Nvidia drivers.

been there, tried that... file not found...
XConfigurator is a Redhat thing if I'm not mistaken.

I accept. :)
And yes, I'm sure something like Mandrake 8 or Redhat 7.2 would automagically work, but I don't like those!!! :) I love slack

try xfree86setup
The Ghost Of Ille Pugil

does that rely on the same database as xf86config? Because that won't list the NVdriver module at all... And SuperProbe doesn't help. I'll try xfree86setup tonight when I get home, tho. thanks.
P.S. I like the sig.

Something I thought of:
The main setting that seems to change from error when loading to "funky screen" (Q.V. Above) is the resolution. The res is set right, but what about the horiz and vert refreshes...
Do Laptops even have vert and horiz refresh at all? Are they similar settings to CRT's? Anyone know where I can find these spec's if they exist?

Oh come on, please! Someone help me! I'm about to go home for the day.... Any ideas?

Thanks, anyway. No, really. I'm off soon, so I'll go play more and post tomorrow.

The only 2 X configuration programs I know of for version 4 is either the old standard xf86config or xf86cfg.
Maybe from the X4.1 docs.
XFree86 -configure
Run the configuration program that will probe and/or guess all your settings.
This will create a new conf in the root directory.
To test this new configuration, run this command:
XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new
Not much else I can suggest. Mine always seems to work first time no matter what I install on.

Want a last resort solution that probably won't work? Sure you do.
If redhat/mdk would do it automajically, why not just do a very minimal install of one of those, copy the XF86Config file onto a floppy then reinstall Slack. Yes this sounds painful I know, but if you don't know what else to do.....

Ghost:
Is this the default 2.4.5 kernel if so recompile for 1 processor, or for quick dirty fix:
check /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h and change #define CONFIG_SMP 1 to #undef CONFIG_SMP.
Good Luck

mdwatts 3rd:
I tried xf86config (and xf86cfg is just a shortcut to xf86config) - The GeForce2 Go isn't in there, and I'm not sure what a compatible driver is. XFree86 -configure doesn't help, it says the card isn't in the database... Yeah, this is actually the first problematic setup I've had, usually goes smoothly.
Recluse:
I might just do that, except that I don't have the complete setup disks for rhat 7.1(only disk 1) or Mdk (8.0 is mostly downloaded, not all) so that option is out for the moment...
Laslo7:
This is a recompiled kernel by me, so SMP is disabled. This happens with kernel 2.2.x and 2.4.5
All:
I think I'll go with reclus'e suggestion, and try a minimal install of Rhat and try that out...
Thanks everyone for your efforts.

ok first of all, clam down. This is not a big deal... Geesh... ok. If you have xfconfig, that's all you need. I know that your Gforce 2 go isn't listed under video cards, but who cares? your gonna switch the driver anyways. Just Pick a video card close to the one you have. When it askes you to test the config say no. and have it write the XF86Config file. So now you have an almost working XF86Config file. Now fire up your favorite text editor, mine is vi, and go edit the XF86Config file that was just written. You'll need to change the "driver" line from whatever it is (probablly nv) to "nvidia". As long as you have your monitor timing correct this should do the trick.
The Ghost Of Ille Pugil

Thanks.
I was going to do that, but I'm not sure what drivers are compatible. Any ideas? This is my first Nvidia card, as well as first laptop. :) I guess those two are completly numbing my brain... ugh.... ur...
</RAMBLE>
So, which drivers are compatible in X 4.1.0 with my card?
Silent Bob
08-28-2001, 09:26 AM
Any Geforce 2 drivers *should* be acceptable. Nvidia has a "unified driver architecture" so all their cards use the same drivers (don't ask me how).

I didn't see anything nvidia in there, let alone geforce... Am I missing something?

Slack 8.0 -there is not XF86Setup its now a probing only xfree86setup and it alone has worked on everything I have put Slack 8 on, GF2, Voodoo3, TNT2, the old TNT various no name BS cards, (atleast good enough to make X work, some additional config required for some cards, but nonetheless X would work just the way it was)
And to get more comparible to what you have my Dell Inspiron 8100 and my older 4000, right after the install I ran xfree86setup and it worked perfectly have had no need to make any config changes, Is it same card as 8100 GF2go? It might not be optimized to its fullest like that but I get 32bit and its native res which is all that matters to me since I save the game playing for the desktop.

now that sound promising.
I believe the same card is in the 8000 as the 8100 - just p'raps different RAM. I will definitly try that one when I get home.

Just remember the first time I tried to install slack 8.0 I made changes to x config files trying to make it work before I knew about the xfree86setup thing and then ran the xfreee86setup and it was a no go and couldnt make it work until I did a fresh reload and ran that immediately after without making any changes to any config files. So if you made changes to any X config files try to put them back to normal if possible.

use the program xf86config, and when it gets to the video card, select 320, which is the geforce 256 I believe. You should be able to start up X now, but if you want GLX, you need the drivers from nVidia.
After you install those, edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file, changing the video driver from "nv" to "nvidia". This should be close to line 367, also uncomment (take out the #) Load "glx".
hope this helps.

Okay, I went right home (i'm there now) and I reinstalled slack fresh. Ran xfree86setup, and it's a no go. Says the card is not in the database. (same error from XFree86 -configure)
After that I installed the NVdriver mod, and the same thing. Tried setting up as a frame buffer..same thing, but the generic driver is yet to be done. I'll try that out and be right back. Thanks all, for all y'all's help.

You may want to look here http://orion.chem.vt.edu/i8000/ at the example XF86Config-4 file posted there. For Slack you'd rename it to XF86Config, but it should work the same. This one is also an 8000 with an ATi video card, but I think what is holding you up is the Monitor and Screens section of your config. Your refresh rates in the XF86Config file you posted are way off from what is listed as the refresh rate for the display on your laptop.

Thanks for the idea, demetrius, will try that out.
Thanks again to all who've had soooo much patience with me.

You seem to be erroring on the nvidia kernel module. Are you sure it compiled properly and that it is getting loaded? Is NVdriver listed if you issue a lsmod?
Also check the output from cat /proc/nv/card0 and make sure everything looks normal there.

So me, in my *infinite* knowledge of X hacking (yeah right) decided to change to depth to 16 to see if that worked. Here's the error:

So then, I went back at it and changed all back to 24, except for the FBdepth (Frame buffer?) - it was left at 16:

Okay, here's the info from proc, does it look wrong to anyone else but me?
I don't think you can put too much stock in the info from proc judging from mine at least. It's agp nVidia GeForce2 MX and I know it's running accelerated 3D because QuakeIII rocks :D
It is really curious that the model in yours is unknown though. Maybe because it unloaded??
hrmm... may be right. I think I may have forgotten to load the NVdriver module that time (it's not loading at startup yet).
Any other ideas, people?

Have you added the /sbin/modprobe NVdriver into the rc.modules?
Quick Dirty test:
SU to root at prompt type modprobe NVdriver,
exit root, startx.
See if that works.

I've been just manually modprobe'ing it every boot, because I've reinstalled the driver a few times...

last desperate plea for help! I can understand if we've exhausted everyone's resources - There's enough posts here
If nobody can think of anything else to try, I think I'll switch over to redhat or something that automagically detects...
Many, many, many thanks again to all who have helped. I appreciate it very much. You are a tribute to the wonderfulness that is linux and LNO.
Either way, I'm rambling. Again, any other ideas?

One more thing that I can think of.
X -configure
does it automatically. It has never worked for me but try that.
Before you do though what is the Default depth set at in XF86config? If it is 1 still change it to 16 or 32.
The Ghost Of Ille Pugil

X -configure is the same as XFree86 -configure, and gives the same error messages.
Default depth has been tried at 24 and 16... No joy.

Now this is what I call support, where else will you get 40 posts for an X configuration problem. Gotta love those that love the penq.

okay, it's gotten worse. I decided to wipe slack and go with something more "automagical" and "user friendly" to get my X working... After installing Redhat 7.1 (and it crashing after reboot forcing me to disable kudzu and network from /etc/rc.d), it couldn't detect X and would run X from a generic driver (only to have a corrupted display - as if resolution was too high?) and have the system lock up...
So, to make an exceedingly long story (and post) short, I removed all instances of the X that comes with RedHat 7.1 and installed X 4.1.0, the modules for the vid card and now I'm just getting errors - and they look suspiciously the same... Here's the relevant info:
XFree86 has found a valid card configuration.
Unfortunately the appropriate data has not been added to xf86PciInfo.h.
Please forward 'scanpci -v' output to XFree86 support team.

BTW, I did try the "XFree86 -configure" and that gave me the same previous error...
As well as XConfigurator... any ideas?

First of all...Hello...
I have a Gladiac MX SDR, and installed the NVidia reference drivers for linux just fine.
What you have to be sure of is that you are running on XF86Config-4, not the previus version. If you read the NVidia FAQ...it clearly states that it will NOT work with the previous version (XF86Config).
I selected the driver for a GeForce2 (generic) DDR card, and it is working just fine. All you need to do is install XF86Conf-4 and then install the drivers from NVidia. After that just select the closest driver match for the card that you have...
Hope this helps.

This current config is actually from the Dell Website for this specific laptop. The drivers are from Nvidia's website for this exact chip. I also tried the GeForce 2 driver, and that bombed out as well (although there was something on the screen, it was mashed together as if wrong resolution).

I got it working! :D :D :D
Here's what I did:
1) Format/reinstall Slack 8.0 ( I really like slack)
2) Change #Define CONFIG_SMP 1 to #undef CONFIG_SMP
3) make/install NVidia drivers
4) xf86config - set to 320 (generic nvidia)
5) edit'd XF86Config with the following: (not quite sure what the exact lines are, not at home)
Option "IgnoreDiD"
Option "NvAGP"
Modeline ...... (Again not at home)
and now it works, sort of... here's my current post with these current trials on finalizing X (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=022716).
Thanks to all those who helped me. yes, I'm going to write and submit an NHF when this is all done, as well a create a page for setting up an I8k with linux on my homepage. Thanks again for all the help.
