Ok, I'm a sorta newbie... I have been running Linux on my Desktop for about 6 months. My problem is my brand-spankin' new laptop. A compaq 12XL304, with 64MB of Ram... It has a Trident Cyberblade3d vid card. It uses shared memory. Anyone with a similar set up out there get XWindows to run properly?
Any feedback is welcome.

What configuration utility are you using and with what distribution? With this info, more help can be given and what X version.

I'm running mandrake 7.2, and I've tried with both version 3.3.6 and 4.0.2 (I think, was there a 4.0.1?) of XWindows. I've tried with both XConfigurator, and XFdrake.

At the cli type xf86config that is another utility and see how you go.
Good luck!

gave it a try... here's the prob. I can get XWindows to configure, however, it is not usable... it jerks, and slides, the cursor disappears, and it displays jibberish... The only way I can get it to sort of be usable is by using Blackbox. However, if I open certain programs, like StarOffice, or the Gimp, or some of the games... it goes back to the above mentioned mess. Any other pointers? I tried tech support for mandrake and they couldn't/didn't help me. D'oh! So, the big question is: has anyone got it to work on a Compaq 12XL304 with an HPA monitor.
Thanks for the quick advice by the way.

I'm not sure, but the trick to this problem might be to use as little memory for video as possible. 1024x768 @16 bpp would probably be the max resolution gou could get. This uses around 2-4MB of memory. Try using a lower resolution if this doesn't work. Or if it does increase resolution to where you want it up to the maximum stable.

i'd suggest heading over to the linux on laptops page (just plug "linux on laptops" into google and hit "i'm feeling lucky"... should get you there!) there are xconfigs for just about every laptop in existence

I had the same problem with a Dell Inspiron; basically I just went with SVGA server and 800x600@16bpp. It worked well enough for me to be able to go in and alter the XF86Config file. For the Dell and RedHat there are special settings that ened to be put in, so make sure you check the laptop pages because you can probably be sure that someone has had the same problem somewhere and fixed it somehow!
Good luck!
