I was just trying to install slackware 8.0. I finished the installation and then there was a reboot. After the reboot and after the BIOS screen all there were just a ton of 40 going across the screen. Does anyone know what this means? What am I setting up wrong that would cause this? Any help would be appreciated.

You mean the screen displayed

404040404040404 and so on?

Never heard of that before.

Could you please tell us a little more about how the drive is partitioned, where the bootloader is installed and if you dual/multiboot.

i've seen that before and from what i gather, it's a corrupt mbr.
you may want to try reinstalling slackware...
iirc, 04 is a hex error from the HDD.
it MIGHT be 40, but i think it was 04...
we just reinstalled, and it worked fine the second time...
if your HD is too old, replace it.
you MIGHT have some non-functional sectors around your mbr?

Mkae sure you configure LILO to boot from MBR and not superblock to keep it simple!

Maybe all those ' 40 ' or '04 ' are coming from lilo. Did you make a boot disk when you installed? Use it to boot into slack and look at your /etc/lilo.conf file. You could also post a copy here.

reboot linux with the slack install cd, when you get to the boot prompt, there's an example for root=/dev/hda1 (IIRC - not at home at the moment).

After you've booted up into linux, login. Then run liloconfig once more... see if that helps. Make sure to send it to the MBR to reset whatever's in there.
