Installed the linux point release from id's ftp site, seemed to go fine, then copied the pak0.pk3 to the /usr/local/games/quak... directory.

But when I type quake3 in the console, it gives the following lines:

And just gives a black screen. The only way to exit is ctrl+c. Something wrong with my sound card? What do I do? Any suggestions at all?

Just found out, it works perfectly fine in GNOME (I was using kde 3). Anybody else got this problem?

The only time this happens to me is when I put in a bad .pk3, using Gnome. Once I remove the offending pack it's fine...

Keeper,
are you using a windows cd by chance? I loaded with the windows cd and mine freezes the second I spawn

Yes, I was using the retail windows quake3 CD. But GNOME isn't bad at all.

Under KDE, if you artscontrol --help, you should get a message about a way to stop the arts daemon (artsd). You could also killall artsd, but that isn't the nicest way to do it. There should also be an argument to artscontrol that will let you start it up again.

Try stopping artsd, running the game, and then restarting it afterward, and see if that helps.

I had a problem running Q3 on KDE using binaries for the windows based CD. But since i got the linux version, I haven't had a problem with it. KDE does mismanage the Pk3's sometimes as well. I found some that was in my home directory.

Thanks bwkaz, works after I:

killall artsd ; quake3 ; artsd&

I do hope it's the right way though.
