I installed Mandrake 7.2 on a VERY simple System. (p133 crud for video card... but i dont plan to use x). I have tried SEVERAL times to install Linux compat Progs. on this system (ftp mostly... so i can get to the larger stuff on my network). Every time i try i get errors such as "install:make:command does not exisit" or "Makefile:Acess denied". Im logged in as root at the time..... what am i doing wrong???

IIRC, during the install routine for drake 7.2 it will ask you what type of install you want (workstation, development, etc.). Choose the development option. This will automatically install the compilers and associated libraries so that you will be able to compile and install programs or write your own programs.. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong!
