Last week I installed Mandrake 8.2 as a dual boot with Win98SE.

I don't think I got the "complete" package. I used the "Recommended" option (I think ?) as opposed to the "Expert". but I noticed that choices came up that the manual said " This step is generally ignored for Recommended mode".

The program came with 7 CDs and when the program said "It's Finished !" there were two CDs [Commercial apps 1 & 2] that were never used.

Now while most things I try seem to be working, KDE, Gnome etc. I have NO sound and on the Gnome desktop I get a message that "some" sound package is NOT INSTALLED.

MY QUESTION - Can I install the CDs again, ON TOP OF THE PRESENT INSTALLATION ?? I know you can reinstall Windows over an existing version BUT will this work with Mandrake Linux or do I have to uninstall everything and Fdisk the drive and start over ??

Not too familiar with Mandrake, but in RedHat, you can open either GnoRPM or the Packages program, and it will let you install other packages/components from the install CDs without having to completely reinstall the OS.

psigourney,

Thanks for response, even if I find out how, I'm not sure what additional packages I need to add or which CD they are on.

During initial installation a screen gave me choices of "Office workstation", "Game station", "Internet station" etc... I probably should have chosen more.

I expected the "Recommended" option would be more "automatic" and not leave so many choices up to me.

I think I will just reinstall the CD's again !! And see what happens. Worse case, I can Fdisk, format and reinstall from scratch.

I doubt that re-installing would do an awful lot, unless you know exactly what that error message is telling you.

Mandrake automatically detects your coundcard and should identify it and install the drivers. If you look in the Mandrake Control Centre, look in Hardware, choose Sound Card and choose to configure it. Once you have, open up a mixer application from the Multimedia menu, and see where all the level controls are. Drag them up if you need to.

That might help.
