Hey there:

Whenever I am working on my computer at school, which uses dhcp to assign ip's, if I leave my computer unattended for a while and then want to login remotely from someplace else, I cannot get to my computer by logging in, pinging, etc. so it appears that my ip is gone, but if I go to my computer, then I can do stuff on the network without having to re-run dhclient. this is really bothering me and has happened on different distro's and for a while. and the school's network sucks anyways and I had a hard prob getting an ip through dhcp in linux anyways, as a few others I know also did. so is it possible that it is a server prob or is it me? Do they make microsoft only dhcp servers??? Thanks

Im just guessing really, but your school network prolly runs through some sort of bastion host proxy to get to the Internet and thats why you cant directly ping your hosts ip. Where are you trying to connect from? Off the campas? Then thats probably why. Just a guess tho. And no, the dont make ms only dhcp servers.

I'm trying to ping from on campus in one of the labs that I work in. I have to spend 3 hour stints in here, and would like to work on my linux box in my room, a few hundred yards away. If I am working on my box and then come to work and login right away, I can get on for a while, then if I pause it will kick me off, and sometimes even if I try to ping it like 2 hours later it will be up, but not for more then 15 mins or so, and it really sucks, because I can't do any work.
