For just accessing the commandline while in KDE, check on the panel (at the bottom) and you should have a icon of a monitor and a sea shell. That will be one of them named Konsole.

Also in the KDE menu under System and Utilities, you will also find Xconsole, Xterminal, Shell and Terminal etc. There's a lot that are included with most distros.

Just wanted to say Thanks to sandwichs cos i've been having same problem. I just switched from Windows 98se and it's a big learning curve but fun! Feeling ok about sending what seems like trivial questions and getting really helpful and considerate answers is brilliant for ones self confidence.
