Just installed RedHat Linux v8.0. Installation was really easy. However, I have no sound.

The new GUI is alittle different from v7.3....

Sound Card Configuration states that:
Vendor Creative Labs
Model: SB Live! EMU10k1
Module: disabled

I assume that the driver is correctly loaded, it just looks like the module is disabled.

How do I enable the module.

Thanks for the help!

Figured it out....with the help of another post. Maybe I an starting to get the hang of this... (':D')

I edited the /etc/modules.conf

I had nothing in it related to sound.
From the other sound card post I got the following lines:

alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1
alias sound-slot-1 audio

I added these lines, rebooted...and whamo sound.

(':p')

Just installed Redhat 8.0 Pro. Sndconf works just fine. Checked the file /etc/module.conf found the line: alias sound-slot-0 es1370

echo'd in alias sound - slot-1 audio without any results.

System logs indicate:

Oct 2 19:36:57 xxxxxxxxx kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 9 for device 00:0a.0
Oct 2 19:36:57 xxxxxxxxx kernel: es1370: found adapter at io 0xdcc0 irq 9
Oct 2 19:36:57 xxxxxxxxx kernel: es1370: features: joystick off, line in, mic impedance 0
Oct 2 19:36:57 xxxxxxxxx modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-3

and later:

Oct 3 23:06:34 xxxxxxxxx kernel: cdrom: open failed.
Oct 3 23:06:40 xxxxxxxxx kernel: hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Oct 3 23:06:40 xxxxxxxxx kernel: hdd: command error: error=0x54
Oct 3 23:06:40 xxxxxxxxx kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 16:40 (hdd), sector 64
Oct 3 23:06:40 xxxxxxxxx kernel: isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=16:40, iso_blknum=16, block=32
Oct 3 23:07:06 xxxxxxxxx kernel: cdrom: open failed.

I guess I'm not understanding why my sndconf works and desktop bells and whistles work yet my cdroms don't want to cooperate. ???

I have the same problem, and the sound server sounds like crap in gnome... Mplayer, aviplay, xmms, and grip all sound great... just no cd player..

modprobe -c shows

alias char-major-57 esp
alias char-major-58 esp

should esp be in there twice?
hmm.... probably...

after last nights affair getting all my multimedia programs rippers and codecs werking I was going to put this problem off untill I got my new parts but I think I know whats wrong.... time to fall back into the depths of the man pages....

Well this is the third time (at least) that I've posted this, one fairly recently, and one quite a while ago.

Your CD music doesn't play the same way that MP3's (or other audio files on your hard drive) play!

MP3's go from your hard drive, through your processor (to be decompressed), to your PCI bus, to your sound card, out to your speakers.

CD's, on the other hand, don't go through any of this. The audio data goes off the CD, out the little 4-conductor wire in the back of the CD drive, directly into your sound card, and out your speakers.

What this amounts to is that you need a wire there for one, and it (usually) has to be a 4-conductor version, for two. There's an alternative 2-conductor version used on some drives and some sound cards, but I'm not sure if they'll work with Linux's sound card drivers. Take it safe, and use the 4-conductor wire.

One other thing might be that your "PCM" mixer channel's volume is up, but your "CD" channel's volume is still muted.

I have sound in MOST of my 8.0 apps but Chromium has no sound . Redhat slapped 8.0 together as an answer to MDKs release of 9.0 . Im going back to RH 7.3 and MDK 9.0 . At least Mandrake got their distro ready for release .

Thanks for the tip bwkaz. I know my drives are wired but I hadn't seen anything yet regarding the preference for a 4 conductor wire. I'll check it out.

thanks for the info... looks like my jumper wires are only the three wire type....
