compiling programs!?!

I am a new user of Linux. Yesterday I installed Corel Linux over wind :mad: ws 95. Its working great, and I have sucessfully added some software, but I dont know how to compile source, as you have to do with most programs. I think it has to do with the console, but because its the downloaded version, it dosent have any good documentation (or a tux :( ). Thanks for the help.
