I am having trouble getting into X using startx, it keeps bombing on me with a boat load of errors. I am not sure how to get the file out of there so I can post it to see if anyone can spot the problems. I have reinstalled 3 times to no avail, tried every option in the install using RedHat 7 and it's just X that is not working.
Second question. How can you keep others on the network from accessing files that you are currently using? Is there some kind of command or switch that would allow this to happen?

When you type startx, do it this way:
startx 2> error.log
Then post the error.log file here so we can have a look at it.
I'm not sure what you're asking with your second question. You don't want people to access certain files when you're working on them, but allow them to access it when you're not working on it?
Linux has a locking mechanism and permission settings. If you're the only one who has write permissions on a file, then you're the only one who can modify it. Everyone else can read it (if you give them permission) but otherwise can't modify it.
Hope that helps.

Thank you for the prompt reply.
Ok I have the error.log but now I am not sure how to get it out of where it's at and over to another drive to post up here. I am dual with Win2k on a seperate HD but Win2k can't see the linux drive. I am not sure what the primary HD on the system is called RH is on the slave drive. Sorry for the dumb questions but you gotta start somewhere. Ah nevermind I got it, amazing what you can do when you use all that gray matter in your head.
I have put the file at this addy
http://www.voodoosource.net/vsnet/3dfx/files/error.log
I would greatly appreciate any assistance with this mess. This is a fresh install of RH 7.0. Using a PIII 700 for this with a BH6 MB (BX chipset) and a GeForce 2 MX. It always detects the card during setup as a generic GeForce DDR but then it always fails on the probe so I configured what it was manually but so far 0 for 3 on the installs.
Thanks!

first: get the newest version of X, 4.0.2-1 i think.
try messing with xf86config, i was unable to get X4 to work, until i set the server to vga. (i got a "supported" card) so vga worked fine except that it ran in 320x200 and thus was useless.
