Sounds like whatever resolution you're using for that user is doing bad things. Try setting that user's X resolution to a lower value and see if that helps.

Thats what it sounds like ok but cant get to Xconfigurator with the monitor turned off.
reinstalled OS and set resolution lower (generic super vga 800 x600) still the same thing.

hmm yeah, mandrake loads X, and it gives u an option to go to console mode. but since ur monitor turns off while loading X, you wouldnt be able to click the button that does that =]

so u gotta stop it before it loads X, but im not sure how...
hopefully someone else will reply with the answer =]

or, just reinstall and use the 640*480 resolution and see if it works.
from there, work your way up to the higher resolutions.

Also, you may want to try setting up your card as a generic (s)vga card and see if that doesn't help.

If you're using lilo to boot, at the menu try selecting the option to edit the command line. It will probably just say linux. Try putting a 3 at the end (you end up with "linux 3" without the quotes). This should start you in runlevel 3 which will be console instead of X. Not sure how to fix the rest of your problem but at least you will be able to get to your config files.

Did you choose to use XFree86 4.0.2 during your installation? I did and my monitor behaved exactly as yours did. I reinstalled and chose to use XFree86 3.3.6 instead and everything was peachy. Might be worth a shot if nothing else works.

Be sure to disable all APM in the BIOS. If you still want APM, that's fine, but let the kernel handle it, not the BIOS settings.

when booting, it'll get to the interactive setup screen, hit the I key, and it will boot to a box asking for the root password, and what you want, ex. console mode, console + network, etc.

select the console mode, and go into /etc/X11 and modify your XF86Config-4 or XF86Config files, and change the resolution to one that your monitor can handle. hope that helps.

It did that with my computer as well. I was using XFree86 4.0.2 with an ATI Radeon. I fixed the problem by removing the Radeon and putting my GeForce 2 in, and then installed. If you are using GRUB, then there should be a failsafe option that will not load X. Then you should beable to use vim or pico to edit you XF86Config-4 (sometimes it's XF86Config) file to match your hardware.

It would help to know what kind of video card you are using.
