I have SuSE 7.2 installed and would like to create a small FAT32 partition to throw win98 on for games. I was curious whether there is a utility for this in the SuSE distro and or another way in which I could do this.

Furthermore, will windows rape my primary OS as I try to keep it in its "small pen" I'm reluctantly building for it?

If yopu have room to make a FAT32 partition or better yet - another hard disk then you have a few options.

I also like VMWare - You can load up Linux and then create a virtual machine that runs at the same time within the host OS. I ran Win98 within Win2k and it was really handy for debugging exchange and SQL because they have seperate IPs and everything - I assume the Linux version does the same.

With a second disk you could change the active partition to select which one to boot off of.

Or you can create a linux boot disk then install windows on the FAT32 HDD which must be the active partition. Then boot into Linux from the floppy and edit the /etc/lilo.conf file appropriately and run LILO to recreate the MBR.

I'm pretty sure these are all the options but I'm pretty new to this too :)

Generally, you should try to make partitions with the OS software that will be using them, so using Winblows fdisk utility to create it's partition would be a good idea. (Re)Partitioning a HardDrive always raises issues though, for anything already on that drive. If you need to delete your Linux partition (to resize it) it and all data on it, will be lost. When I moved from Winblows only to a dual boot system, I aquired a second hard disk for Linux to reside on so I didn't have to change anything about Windows.

Don't forget that Windows HAS to install to the first partition on a harddisk. It might just be a lot easier to pick up a 6gig HD somewhere.

Make a boot disk first...

you can attack this two ways...

One... take said drive out and switch the jumpers on the back to read for secondary master, stick it in with another drive, setup windows, boot to disk and then modify lilo and /etc/fstab to make clear the changes to the filesystem.

two... get said 6 gig drive and use VMWare to install windows on said windows drive and use it like that...

The thing is. windows REQUIRES it be on the first partition of the drive, no matter what.

The Linux version of VMware won't let you play much of the newer games that require DirectX. This since VMware only have support for whatever the host supports, and as far as DirectX goes .... not much support under Linux.

Support for Creative's soundcards is almost nonexistent in the Linux version of VMware too.

Cheers :)

What in the name of hades are you talking about? You are an absolute moron if you believe one single bit of this 100% false tripe.

You are a liar, and what you say is not true in any way whatsoever. It is absolutely, in every way, false. I don't know what planet you're living on, but it certainly isn't earth.

You should be punched in the face for lying to newbies.

If you delete your last post (click the "Edit" button, then check the "Delete" checkbox and), I will delete this one too. I don't want any newbies to have to see the lies you make up and the misinformation you spread. If you delete it, however, I'll forgive and never mention it again. If you do not delete it, I will devote my life to exposing and refuting every lie to spread and proving to everyone that you don't know what you're talking about.

I am absolutely shaking with rage right now. I was looking forward to having a happy, productive day, but now you've ruined it. I have an appointment to donate plasma at 7AM, but when the needle is in my arm I'm going to be thinking about your lies. I'm having lunch with a friend today, but when I'm ordering my food I'm going to be thinking about your lies. I'm doing some birthday shopping after that, but when I'm browsing the aisles at my local Wal-Mart I'm going to be thinking about your lies. I'm going to do some spring cleaning of my apartment later this afternoon because I'll have visitors coming over soon, but the entire time I'll be thinking about your lies. I'm going to be watching the next-to-last episode of Big Brother on television tonight, but I won't be able to concentrate because I'll be thinking about your lies. I was going to get a good night of sleep tonight after doing all that, but I probably won't be able to get to sleep because of your lies. Every time I talk to another human being, everywhere I go, everything I see, I'm going to be haunted by the fact that you spread wrongness to newbies.

If you disagree with my political or moral beliefs, that's fine. I'll insult you for it, but I'll get on with my life. Opinions are just opinions, and I may strongly disagree with yours, but I'll live with it. But when you intentionally spread wrong facts, that goes beyond opinion -- that's just a crime against humanity. I can't just say "call him a Communist and go on with my day." I have an addiction to the truth, and you've raped the truth.

As far as Craig's concerned, it's the end of the world.

Hope your girlfriend is not staying over tonight. She might get upset.
