hello everyone. im new to this forum but it looks like one of the best ive seen so far.

anyways, i am taking ccna at my school and i just bought a cisco catalyst 1900 switch and a 2500 series router. i am looking for instructions on configuring them using linux/bsd. i already am familiar with the hyperterminal software but i have never hooked it up to a nix box and i want to learn. if anyone has any links or any info at all please post.

thanks,
kevin

How about doing a "screen /dev/ttySx", where "ttySx" is either com1 or com2 on your computer. Then to quit just do a "Ctrl a \". From then on you just do your normal Cisco thing. Try that out and let me know how it works. Later...

EEK! A soon to be Cisco geek!

I have not had any problems using minicom to configure Cisco equipment! You will need to make some changes to the minicom config but that is no big deal. If you have any questions about minicom or how to configure you Cisco equipment. Shoot me an e-mail and I'll be more than happy to help ya! (place something in the subject line so I will not think that your e-mails are spam) I've been working with Cisco equipment everyday for the past three years.

alright i finally got my switch and i have a few questions.

first of all, at school we hook up through a serial/rj45 adapter to the console port on the switch, but all i have is a serial cable. will this do?

i have tried using minicom and also scree /dev/ttyS0 but to no avail.

please let me know if using the serial cable is even feasible.

thanks, kevin

Your serial cable will work, but you'll still need to get a DB9-to-RJ45 adapter. You can pick these up pretty much at any Radio Shack for a few bucks. That's what I did. HTH

i did order a console cable but its not here yet. as for the serial cable, i just hook it up from my pc to the back of the switch correct? i did this and it doesnt work, but its most likely a problem on the miniconf end. i have it set to 9600 8-n-1 and that doesnt work and ive tried ttyS0-2 and ive also tried

screen /dev/ttyS0-2 as well.

do i use miniconf to go through the serial cable?

thanks for the help,
kevin

If you are going to connect to a serial port. The switch will have to have an IP address. It's been a real long time since I have seen a 1900 switch. I do not believe that they have a serial port. I could be wrong though. But you will not be about to connect to any Cisco device via serial port unless the device has an IP address.
