Ok this isn't really meant to start a war, but it probably will.
The first person who says KDE in this thread needs to be shot.
I'm going to be switching to either waimea or Enlightenment as my window manager. Probably enlightenment since it is configurable in the ways that I want. I have an extremely high powered machine (watercooled XP1800+ overclocked a great deal).
However, what can gnome itself do that Enlightenment can't? I'm asking a legitimate question, not trying to put down gnome or anything.
I know that through nautilus etc it provides a panel and a desktop with icons. But that is an awful lot of wasted memory just for a panel and a desktop, considering E comes with a little launch bar (is this in 16? or 17 only?)
So besides minor convenience, what is the point of running gnome at all?

I posted to a related thread, so I won't go through my whole spiel, but I have used KDE, Gnome 1.4, Gnome 2.0, fvwm2, fluxbox, windowmaker and a few others. I am now on enlightenment and I love it. It is very easy to configure if you don't mind editing a few config files. They are in a very easy format. Also, the help system will walk you through alot of stuff. I'm running 0.16.5 and it uses both kde and gnome applications great. It even seems to load them faster.

I think you forgot to read the fact that it's insanely overclocked via watercooling :) it's running just over 2.0 ghz (not 2000+, 2.0 ghz)

I like. I think the lil foot is cute. I just like Gnome.
It is faster than KDE.

I overclocked my 'prehistoric' Athlon 1.4 (not 1400+) from 1.4 to 1.401. Beat that.
BTW GNOME is cool, and I have this really cool theme for Nautilus.

Man I'm really starting to fell bad for my decrepid old duron 700. and that's my fastest machine. I don't guess my p133 laptop is welcome in this crowd at all huh? lol

I've got my Athlon XP 2100+ overclocked from 1.65 GHz to 1.6 GHz :D no seriously I don't bother with overclocking. I'm into case-modding instead. Check the link in my sig if you wanna check it out.

these types of posts are highly annoying. all they do it get people pissed off. they serve no purpose.
some people like kde, some like gnome, some don't like desktop environments and use fluxbox, waimea, or enlightenment, etc..
who cares?
it's all personal preference.
i personally use fluxbox with no desktop manager and i use some gnome apps but i don't run gnome (panel, etc. at all).

Hah, actually the light is a car accessory, as is the switch I wired into it (back of the case, can't see it too well in any of the shots).
