Hello: Can you be more specific? I envision you sitting at the computer, logging off, and seeing "failed" messages, and "panicking". You started the computer, and no "failed" messages, right? For starters, chk and see what the netcfg shows for whether eth0 is active or not. You should be able to, as root, type the command: netcfg, then go to interfaces tab, when the app comes up in Xwindows, and see the tab selections either at the top or along the left side of the window. Good luck, Tom

Hi!
yep no failure at startup but only during shutdown. eth0 interface cannot be brought up at start. may i know what exactly is eth0?
upon netcfg a network configurator in gui is brought up. in it under interfaces i have lo eth0, eth1, tuni0 and myri0. when i try to activate eth0 it says operation fail.
pls advise
thanks

eth0 is your first network card(nic), it could fail at coming up for a few reasons. the most likly is you have not given it a ip address. which linux are you running ! as that decides how you config it.

Hello: Good. You're almost there. The best thing to do at this point, even if you're up and running, is to go to http://www.linux.org/docs/ and look for the Ethernet HOWTO. Or, if your system is setup for it, you can type in at the command prompt:
cd /usr/docs/HOWTO
and find it right on your system. Good reading, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS Tom
