You should get the best upgrade where your at. But, without being a smartass, and please don't think I'm doing that! Buy 8.1 in a week or so, and help support Suse Development. Upgrading that way gives you optimal results. This advice was given to me by someone else here also. And I had to agree. Good Luck and Regards!
Or he could d/l SuSE 8.1 Pro (5 cds) here:
ftp://ftp.rosnet.ru/pub/suse/suse-8.1

This may sound like a silly question, but I, too, am looking to upgrade from SuSE 7.0 to 8.0 and am wondering if I can do so without losing files I have saved. Is upgrading Linux similar to that of windoze in that it just replaces old files with new ones and leaves the rest alone, or will i have to save what I have and erase everything in a repartition?

It should be just like upgrading Windows as long as you choose the upgrade option.
It would be very wise to back up anything that you want to keep just in case something gets hosed.
