I've run sndconfig, get the following:

PCI probe results
A PCI card was in found in your system. The deatils are:

Model: VIA Technologies IVT8233 AC97 Audion Controller

which is correct AFAIK (onboard sound chip)

after pressing OK sndconfig dialogue says it will now play a soundsample to check configuration, but nothing happens and sndconfig just hangs. None of my midi players appera to muted, and the "card" works fine in windows. I've googled and searched in these forums, but just found one or 2 other people having the same sort of problem with no solution.

This ain't going to be one of the pesky winmodem-like problems is it?

Have you tried any of the other suggestions in the soundcard related threads?

Tried the volume controls in the sound mixer etc.?

I had a similar onboard soundcard that is supported under Alsa, but I fancied a SB Live! anyway, so I just bought one of them as there very inexpensive these days :) Yeah, I know I'm lazy ;)

Yes you did, however I was really asking if you had read some of the threads that apply to any soundcard.

Permissions, soundmixer controls, verified the sound modules are loaded etc.
